CLAT

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national entrance exam for undergraduate and postgraduate law programs at participating National Law Universities (NLUs) and other law colleges in India. The exam, organized by the Consortium of National Law Universities, is held offline in December and tests comprehension and reasoning skills. The CLAT 2026 exam will take place on Sunday, December 7, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

The CLAT exam syllabus consists of five core sections designed to evaluate a candidate’s aptitude in English, current affairs, legal reasoning, logical reasoning, and quantitative techniques.

Each section carries specific weightage and contributes differently to the overall score. Knowing the distribution of questions and weightage across these subjects in CLAT helps aspirants strategize their preparation effectively.

The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) is responsible for conducting the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). This organization is made up of the vice-chancellors of all the participating National Law Universities in India and organizes the exam for admissions to their undergraduate and postgraduate law programs.

For 2026, there are approximately 4,092 undergraduate (UG) and 1,599 postgraduate (PG) seats across all participating National Law Universities (NLUs) for CLAT. This total includes seats for different categories, such as state domicile, SC/ST, and OBC, as well as supernumerary and NRI seats. The specific number of seats for each NLU can vary based on the institution and its reservation policies.
Total CLAT seats (approximate for 2026)
  • Undergraduate (5-year LLB): Approximately 4,092 seats
  • Postgraduate (LLM): Approximately 1,599 seats
Important factors affecting seat availability
  • Domicile Reservation: A significant portion of seats is reserved for students from the state where the NLU is located.
  • Other Reserved Categories: Seats are also reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Economically Weaker Section (EWS), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD).
  • Supernumerary and NRI Seats: These are additional seats that can increase the total number of available spots.
  • Exclusions: The figures above include most categories, but some sources may provide slightly different numbers depending on what they include (e.g., if they exclude supernumerary seats or seats for certain other categories).
  • Non-Participating NLUs: Not all law universities participate in CLAT. For example, NLU Delhi and NLU Meghalaya conduct their own entrance exams.
